The Hillel center at Sapir College was established in 2007 to meet the needs of students in the Gaza border area who were enduring continued missile attacks. In the ensuing years, Sapir Hillel has designed and implemented numerous large-scale projects for students and local residents. The following is a sampling:
| | | Night Riders radio program on Thursday nights - Taking a look at the weekly Torah reading from a young, new angle. We call it a "radio phonic Beit Midrash." |
| | | Film program - Progressing through the days of creation, with a guest lecturer and a film screening dealing with each day's biblical creation in turn, ending with a session dedicated to the role of mankind on earth. |
| | | Jewish Yoga program - Each yoga session was dedicated to one of Maimonides' principles of Jewish thought concerning body and mind. |
| | | Roving movies in the streets of Sderot - Bringing culture and entertainment to local children and youth with movies under the stars. |
| | | Hevra B'Am (Sharing G'mach) - Israelis from all over the country donate used clothes, books, household items, toys, etc. to the central warehouse, which Hillel students renovated, and the students sort, repair, and display the donated merchandise for local area residents to buy for a nominal sum. This project has expanded in several directions to include a regular recycling module, a unique electronics recycling initiative for the whole Negev region, a series of public events highlighting issues of communal responsibility, and even a new student scholarship program, using the proceeds from the G'mach to help needy students pay for their studies. This project is becoming a model for tzedek projects in Hillel centers around the world. |
| | | Cafe Sderot - Sapir Hillel students collect donations of used books for display and sale (for a nominal sum) in the local Cinemateque's Cafe Yael. Proceeds of the sales are used to bring authors to the cafe to discuss their work. This program is very popular among Sderot residents, and book donations have been coming in from all over Israel. |
