Founded in 1951, Hillel at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem has had a long and successful history, helping generations of Jewish students to connect with their Jewish identity. Located in Beit Hillel on the Mt. Scopus campus, Hillel in Jerusalem offers a wide variety of unique programs for all types of students. The following is a sampling:

Bein HaShurot is a project for immigrant students, with program modules tailored to their specific interests. The project includes a creative writing group, a theater group, and a trivia game tournament. Bein HaShurot is sponsored by the Avi Chai Foundation.

A special program called Speaking Poetry (Yedidi haShachachta?!) brings popular Israeli musicians and a leading paitan (singer of traditional melodies) to share in an evening of music and song from a variety of cultural traditions. The annual Shabbat Piyut takes place in the spring, with famous paitanim. Speaking Poetry is sponsored by the Avi Chai Foundation.

P'sifas (Mosaic) is a popular program that brings students together for intellectual workshops on Jewish topics, including Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), a survey of the Jewish bookshelf, yoga and photography workshops, and a meditation workshop dealing with mind and body. P'sifas is sponsored by the Yoreinu Foundation.

Halas (Enough!) works for social change in Israeli society through the power and energy of the student body. The project includes activism for social justice and human rights; students living and working in an underprivileged neighborhood; environmental affairs; women's issues; and more.

When the Yeshiva and the University Meet is a unique program that brings together university students and members of the hareidi population, to discuss shared values and different perspectives on issues that touch on all of us. The project is supported by Tzav Pius.

Programs for Overseas Students

The Hillel-Hecht Beit Midrash Program provides an opportunity for overseas students to build a Jewish learning community while strengthening their Jewish identity and their commitment to Jewish values and tradition. Students from a variety of backgrounds choose a topic of interest in Judaism and then study that topic with qualified volunteer tutors who are suited to their level and their individual needs. Small study groups are also available. In this way students can develop their relationship to Judaism through the Jewish texts. The Beit Midrash meets every Monday at 8 PM at the Hecht Synagogue on the Mt. Scopus campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This program is celebrating 25 years of successful operation.

The Beit Hillel Theater Workshop, under the direction of Michael Berl, has always been a magnet for talented overseas and English-speaking Israeli students. The Theater Workshop will present Beauty and the Beast in May 2010.
